MUSIC THERAPY PROGRAM
What is Music Therapy?
"Music Therapy is the evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved Music Therapy Program." (American Music Therapy Association)
Music Therapy is a well-established allied health profession in which a board-certified music therapist uses music to provide structured interventions that bring successful, positive experiences and improve quality of life.
The focus of Music Therapy is not to teach musical skills, but to use music as a tool that targets long-term goals and short-term objectives that are the focus of treatment. Music Therapy is used successfully for all ages and disabilities, and because it is a powerful and non-threatening medium, unique outcomes are possible.

Music Therapy at Opportunity Village
Individuals participating in Music Therapy build skills that can transfer to work, leisure, and self-care. The Music Therapy program at Opportunity Village offers a wide variety of experiences including therapeutic group sessions, individual services, and performance-based groups. Each individual is assessed by a Music Therapist and then placement is based upon the individual need and personal choice. Persons served can also participate in a sensory integration session that stimulates all of the senses by using music and special interactive equipment. Here at Opportunity Village, we are able to use a broad range of musical instruments and adaptive equipment that meet individual need.
Music Therapy Outreach
We offer Music Therapy presentations and workshops to organizations in the Clear Lake/Mason City area. Our team attends the AMTA National Conference representing our organization and presents annually on topics relevant to the field and Opportunity Village. The Music Therapy groups perform two concerts annually in June and December that are open to the community.
Music Therapy Internships
Opportunity Village's Music Therapy program is a National Roster Internship Site with Clinical Training Director Gina Hacker, MT-BC. The intern is trained to provide services at the facility including both group and individual services, training in documentation, and sensory integration. Training opportunities in self-awareness, administrative skills, and professional growth are also a component.
In addition, the intern provides services for adults with developmental disabilities in the community and children with developmental disabilities at Music Man Square (Mason City). This position offers extensive opportunities for Music Therapy experiences and should prepare an intern for the professional world.
