Free advocacy training

The Visions Group at Opportunity Village and Mason City's People First will be hosts for an event teaching the basics of self-advocacy on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, in the Village gym at Clear Lake.

From 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., trainers from ID Action will be guiding participants through the process of how bills become laws and the basics of lobbying. A light supper will be served from 6:15 to 6:30. At 6:30, there will be a presentation on voter registration and the opportunity to practice using a voting machine. At 7 p.m., local legislators will be on hand to share issues and answer questions.

The event is made possible through a grant from ID Action. ID Action is a nonpartisan, statewide initiative dedicated to generating greater civic and political participation among people with disabilities. It offers unique tools intended to inform, educate and empower Iowans with disabilities to more effectively advocate for change that increases their opportunities to be productive, independent and included members of their communities.

ID Action is a project of the Iowa Developmental Disabilities (DD) Council, whose vision is to assure that persons with disabilities have a quality of life that offers personal freedoms and inclusion in society.

This event is open to the public and especially encouraged for people with disabilities. There is no cost for the event. The Village is located north of the Fareway Store in Clear Lake. Opportunity Village serves approximately 680 individuals with disabilities in Iowa. For more information about the advocacy event, contact Cindy Richardson at 641-355-1240.
